A particular strength for Stirling is in Big Data
Skills Development Scotland, in their Skills Investment Strategy for the Financial Services sector, noted a concern in the industry on the availability of ICT skills to support the sector. Specific emerging skills needs were identified around analytics and ‘big data’.
Stirling University’s MSc in Big Data has been developed in partnership with global and local companies who employ data scientists. HSBC have a development centre in Stirling and have provided some interesting Big Data projects to students as have other major players based in Stirling such as Capita and Prudential.
Additionally, Stirling is a member of The Data Lab, which is an Innovation Centre with the aim of developing the data science talent and skills required by industry in Scotland. The data lab facilitates industry involvement and collaboration and provides funding and resources for students. Aside from in Stirling, The MSc in Big Data, in collaboration with The Data Lab, is taught at only three other locations in the UK.
A strong financial services sector, high quality business environment and access to some of the most sought after graduates in the UK makes Stirling an obvious choice for businesses seeking to exploit the vast opportunities being presented by big data.
